SHIMANO, BICYCLE FRAME BUILDERS UNITE FOR BREAST CANCER BENEFIT
Public Encouraged to Bid Online for Custom Hand-Built Bicycles; Proceeds to Benefit Young Survival Coalition
Demonstrating a collective creativity and support for the cause of breast cancer awareness, Shimano and five renowned bicycle frame builders joined forces to create five very special custom bicycles that will be auctioned off to garner funds for much needed programs and research regarding young women and breast cancer provided by the Young Survival Coalition. Shimano and frame builders including Ellsworth Handcrafted Bicycles, Rock Lobster Bicycles, Sycip Designs, Torelli Bicycle Company and Vicious Cycles, encourage the public to participate in the Shimano Alfine Pink Ribbon Fundraiser by entering the online auction of the handcrafted bicycles that begins today and ends October 31, 2008. The Web-based auction is accessible online at www.youngsurvival.org.

“We started this effort at Shimano to make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer. As cancer affects us all, the importance of having knowledge in these times and the importance of early detection makes all the difference in the world,” said Dustin Brady of Shimano American Corporation. “Together with these five artisans, the sale of these beautiful one-of-a-kind bikes will raise awareness and money for programs to support breast cancer survivors.”

Proceeds of the auction will benefit Shimano’s partner in this effort, the Young Survival Coalition (YSC), the premier international non-profit network of breast cancer survivors and supporters dedicated to addressing the concerns and issues unique to young women and breast cancer.

“The YSC’s continuing efforts to bring programs and research to young women affected by breast cancer will be greatly enhanced by the funds raised from Shimano’s Alfine auction. We are thrilled to be a part of this groundbreaking event with Shimano and the five wonderful frame builders, especially with YSC’s focus on cycling as a vehicle for fundraising and awareness,” said Marcia Stein, CEO of Young Survival Coalition. “The YSC will continue to work with Shimano to expand the outreach to young women with breast cancer.”

The collaborative effort combined Shimano’s core strengths in bicycle components with the creative genius of the gifted frame builders to create the five one-off lifestyle bicycles. Each builder donated their creative capabilities and materials to the project with Shimano donating components for each bicycle. Shimano equipped each of the bicycles with its Alfine internal hub gear components that compliment the unique frame designs with a smooth functioning ride and stylish durability for urban riding.
